S.M. Campbell
I write the fantasies I want to read, and my characters hate me for it.
FAQs
When did you start writing?
I’ve been telling stories and consuming stories my entire life. The list of creative pursuits I have been involved in (some for fun, some for work) include (but are not limited to): board game creation, graphic novels, screenplays, model painting, writing, theatre design, reading. Stories are at the heart of each one of these, thus I’ve been absorbing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. So, I started storytelling from a young age, and writing is just one of the ways I do that. Though Corrupted Tides was my first published work, it wasn’t my first foray into writing, either. I have a pile of drafts and unfinished works that yell at me from the corner.
How did you come up with Corrupted Tides and the Eldritch Depths series?
It actually was a long evolutionary process that began with a cosplay idea. I had become extremely obsessed with the video game Bloodborne, and found myself pouring all of my time into immersing myself in that world. While consuming every article and piece of fan art I could find, I came across an art contest for Bloodborne 2 concepts. One of the entries was a seafaring version with city ships and whale hunting. I loved it, and thought I could take it further. So I began creating a cosplay idea about a character called a Deep Warden who would hunt Eldritch Monsters beneath the waves of a water covered world. It was so cool, I decided I would make an amazing board game. After a year and a half of developing the world and several drafts of the game, my wife suggested I actually write a book series, and I’m so glad she did. Much of what I came up with for the game has made it into the book, including magic system, creatures, and weapons.
